Transforming his New York home into an art gallery space for contemporary art and design, Oliver Garcé was inspired by the coronavirus pandemic.

Located on the third floor of a historical building, the apartment has been a victim of a dramatic change. Reimagined with the designer’s and friends’ works, the new art gallery now includes collectible furniture, decorative lighting, ceramics, and original artworks.

The idea of upgrading his New York apartment into an art gallery was born out of a discussion between the designer and his friend Ian Felton, a collectible furniture designer.

With the desire to find opportunities for inspirational moments and collaboration at a time when they would be confined, the pair knew that others were experiencing the same feelings. They came up with a brief that they would invite other artists to participate in the upcoming art gallery.

In order to make this new art gallery even more special and unique, some of the pieces you can find in it were designed especially for this exquisite project.

“It was very interesting to push these guys to create new pieces.” – Olivier Garcé

One of the most striking pieces created for this project was a coffee table with three carved wood legs and a pink-glazed surface, designed by Felton. This furniture piece sits in front of a fireplace, side by side with a side chair and rocking chair, also designed by the same designer.

For displaying, Garcé also added his collection of vintage furniture and artworks, including a hand-carved wooden mask, paintings from Imi Knoebel and Claire Tabouret, and some tableware.

Olivier Garcé described the experience of living in this art gallery as “like being in a dream”. The designer and his partner have opened the space for visitation on an appointment basis.

Even though things have had to change over time, due to a new surprise in the designer‘s personal life, the concept will continue in the future. Garcé has bought a new apartment in Lisbon, that he plans to transform, as well, in an art gallery.
