The bright and bold interiors of this home belie the fact that this residence is indeed in Edinburgh, housed within a Victorian building.

Bold colors, shapes and unexpected treatment of period architectural details is the hallmark of the Sam Buckley creative universe.

One such person is the homeowner Brenda Carey, a senior computer games designer at Rockstar Games. Carey had followed Sam Buckley’s career and was fascinated with what he could do with her traditional Victorian abode.

Sam Buckley is known to blend color and shapes to deliver the most mesmerizing compositions, be it via the products he designs or the spaces he envisions.

“I have always liked bold colours, for a long as I can remember. I grew up during the 80s when the world was being quite experimental with colours and I guess I’ve carried that through into my own work.”

The jump-off point for this project was a velvet by French textile house Lelièvre that both he and the client fell in love with. From there, Buckley envisioned a daring scheme, imagining the walls, ceilings, and floors of this house as his canvas.

“This scheme feels quite playful, but I think that’s maybe down to the super graphics rather than the choice of colours. I rendered the full design in 3d so I could experiment quite a lot with ideas and present them to the client.”

Once approved, it was down to the basics – Sam Buckley himself transferred designs from paper to walls using pencils, strings, and a compass. Here, the buck indeed stopped with Sam Buckley.

From pristine period architectural details that Sam Buckley celebrates in rather non-traditional ways and an unexpected design for the ceiling rose, to hand-enameled push-plates for the doors that echo the graphic codes of the concept, each corner of this home is intelligently calibrated in daring compositions of color, shape, and texture.

For a scheme that might seem extravagant, indulgent even, it is in fact born from Buckley’s deep appreciation for the impact color can have on how we live.

“Colour is a natural part of our lives. How often do you hear people yearning for green vegetation, or blue skies, or red roses? It baffles me that the default house colour is white. It’s the most unnatural colour, the hardest to keep clean, the harshest on the eye, and let’s be honest it’s kinda boring! There are infinite colours out there to enjoy, nature manages to make sure of them brilliantly, so why do we try and shun that?”
