If there’s one thing better than a Gucci flagship, it has to be, well, more Gucci flagship. And by more, we mean more space, more decor, and more beautifully curated products from the brand’s menswear, womenswear, accessories, beauty, home and childrenswear collections. In fact, if you were looking for an excuse to dive deeper into the heady world of the Italian luxury house, the newly renovated Sydney flagship is the perfect excuse.
After undergoing extensive renovations this year, the Westfield Sydney store has expanded to an impressive 11,702 square feet, across two massive floors. Redesigned to align with the luxury giant’s global store aesthetic, the interiors are a lesson in chic and elegant simplicity, albeit with a few Gucci signatures, such as eclectic patterned wallpaper and ornate oriental rugs.
The store’s aesthetic is one that personifies the brand’s irreverent approach to design – there are plush velvet armchairs juxtaposed with hand-painted parquet flooring and decorative patterned tiles that are used to section off each collection within the store. Carefully curated products are displayed proudly on walls and cabinets, offset by velvety soft matelassé draping in shades of dark grey, sage or dusty rose; and accessories such as handbags and shoes are arranged by collection, enticing you with their tactile appeal.
Stepping over the threshold into the childrenswear section and through the velvet draped curtains, you’ll find a space adorned with gingham and candy stripe wallpaper, and display units featuring Gucci’s irresistible kids’ clothes, shoes and accessories.
While downstairs is dedicated to menswear, bags, shoes, fragrance and the brand’s more recent beauty collections, if you follow the winding staircase upstairs, you’ll find the women’s ready-to-wear collection. Artfully arranged around cabinets displaying Gucci’s jewellery range, there’s also an incredible floral print chaise lounge that creates a mood of boudoir-like intimacy that simply adds to the whole experience.
It’s an exciting and noteworthy moment for the brand locally, reflecting its incredible success on our shores.
“Australia has always been a strategic market for Gucci,” says Emmanuel Delrieu, Gucci’s Regional President of South Asia Pacific, in a statement. “The country offers our brand a very exciting proposition supported by its melting pot of cultures.”
And in a move that ties in with Gucci’s many global collaborations with artists and creatives, Gucci has partnered locally with creative collective O.Z.O to give back to the local art community. Artist Edward Woodley was invited to create a collage-based sculpture, Edward Woodley for Gucci, which currently sits on display on the upper floor of the flagship. Inspired by Gucci’s house codes and the current Epilogue collection, the accompanying video installation, O.Z.O featuring Edward Woodley & Max Berry for Gucci, will be screened in the store’s parlour. You can also pick up a limited edition zine and numbered print, created by Woodley, and available in the store, too.
The Gucci Sydney flagship is located at Shop 3012/4004 188 Pitt Street, Sydney.
